History
Establishment
Aston Villa FC was founded in 1874 by members of the Villa Cross Wesleyan Chapel cricket team looking for a sport to play during the winter. The club quickly grew in stature and became one of the strongest sides in the Midlands. In 1887, Villa won the FA Cup for the first time, and a year later, in 1888, they became one of the twelve founding members of the Football League, confirming their status at the forefront of the new professional era.
Aston Villa’s success and popularity in the late 19th century helped to establish Birmingham as one of the main centers of English football. The club’s ambition, strong support, and early trophies laid a foundation that would support more than a century of top-level competition.
Golden eras & European glory
Aston Villa experienced several golden eras, particularly in the late 19th and early 20th century, when the club won multiple League titles and FA Cups. Villa were crowned champions of England on numerous occasions before World War I, and this tradition of success continued in spells throughout the 20th century.
The club’s greatest modern achievement came in the 1981–82 season, when Aston Villa won the European Cup. Under manager Tony Barton, Villa defeated Bayern Munich 1–0 in the final, with Peter Withe scoring the decisive goal. This triumph placed Aston Villa among the select group of English clubs to have been crowned champions of Europe.
