AFC Bournemouth — History, Identity & Rise to the Premier League
Origins — Boscombe FC to Bournemouth & Boscombe Athletic (1899–1923)
The club originated in 1899 as Boscombe FC, representing a small community in England’s southern coast. After years of local competition and steady growth, the club moved to Dean Court in 1910 and renamed itself Bournemouth & Boscombe Athletic FC in 1923, marking its entry into the Football League a year later.
Dean Court — The Home of the Cherries
Dean Court has been Bournemouth’s home since 1910. Known for its compact design, passionate atmosphere, and tight pitch dimensions, it remains one of English football’s most intimate professional stadiums. Despite multiple renovations and capacity changes, Dean Court embodies the soul and identity of the club.
New Identity — AFC Bournemouth (1972)
In 1972, the club officially adopted the name AFC Bournemouth and introduced the famous red-and-black striped kit inspired by AC Milan. This era marked the beginning of a more modern, ambitious club vision and remains a beloved part of the Cherries’ identity today.
Struggles, Survival & Financial Crises (1980s–2000s)
Bournemouth’s history is filled with near-disasters. The club survived the brink of extinction multiple times, especially during the 1990s and 2000s. Financial instability, administration, point deductions, and relegation battles were constant challenges. At one point, Bournemouth came within minutes of dropping out of the Football League entirely. Yet through dedication of fans, staff, and local community, the club always managed to survive.
The Eddie Howe Miracle — Rebirth of Bournemouth (2008–2020)
Eddie Howe’s arrival changed everything. Taking over at only 31 years old while the club sat last in League Two with a 17-point deduction, Howe inspired one of football’s greatest escape stories. He then guided Bournemouth to an extraordinary rise:
• Survival in League Two • Promotion to League One • Promotion to the Championship • Historic promotion to the Premier League in 2015
Bournemouth’s journey from near collapse to top-flight football became one of the most remarkable success stories in English football history.
Premier League Era — Competing with the Elite (2015–2020)
Despite having one of the smallest budgets and smallest stadiums in Premier League history, Bournemouth impressed with attacking football, intelligent signings, and a fearless underdog mentality. Notable victories against top-six clubs showed the world that the Cherries belonged at the top level.
Relegation, Reset & Return (2020–2022)
After five consecutive seasons in the Premier League, the club was relegated in 2020. However, Bournemouth rebuilt smartly and earned promotion back to the top flight in 2022, proving their growth, ambition, and long-term stability.
Modern Vision — Youth, Growth & Ambition
Today, AFC Bournemouth continues to expand its football project with a modern approach: youth development, strategic recruitment, and infrastructure investment. The club aims to strengthen its identity while staying competitive in the Premier League with discipline, courage, and collective belief.
Bournemouth’s crest features a footballer heading a ball, symbolizing the club’s attacking spirit and strong identity. The red-and-black stripes reflect the modern kit design introduced in 1972.
