New Zealand National League
The New Zealand National League is the top level of men’s club football in New Zealand,
organized by New Zealand Football (NZF).
The modern National League structure was relaunched in 2021, replacing the former
New Zealand Football Championship / ISPS Handa Premiership.
It brings together the best clubs from New Zealand’s regional leagues into a single,
national competition that decides the country’s champion and qualifiers for the
OFC Champions League.
History and facts
National top-flight football in New Zealand dates back to the 1970 National Soccer League. Over the years, the format evolved through the New Zealand Football Championship and the ASB / ISPS Handa Premiership.
In 2021, New Zealand Football introduced a new National League model: clubs qualify through regional competitions and then play in a Championship phase to decide the national winner.
Historically strong clubs include Auckland City, Waitakere United (in the previous Premiership era), and more recently sides like Wellington Olympic and Auckland City in the new format.
League system
The New Zealand National League is a hybrid system:
teams first compete in regional leagues, then the best sides qualify for the
National League Championship.
The main regional qualifying competitions are:
- Northern League (North of the North Island)
- Central League (central New Zealand, including Wellington)
- Southern League (South Island and southern regions)
Top clubs from these regional leagues join a National League Championship phase
played as a round-robin, followed by a Grand Final to decide the champion.

Clubs move up and down between regional levels via promotion and relegation,
while National League participation is earned via qualification from these regional leagues.
