Singapore Premier League
The Singapore Premier League (SPL) is the top-tier professional football league in Singapore.
Founded in 1996 as the S.League, it was rebranded in 2018 to modernize the competition and
boost the nation’s football development.
The league is managed by the Football Association of Singapore (FAS).
History and facts
The SPL was introduced in 1996 to replace the semi-professional FAS Premier League and create a fully professional competition to raise football standards in Singapore.
The league features a mix of traditional clubs, youth development teams, and foreign sides like Albirex Niigata Singapore, a satellite team from Japan which has achieved great success.
In 2018, the S.League was revamped and renamed the Singapore Premier League, focusing on youth development, sports science, and club professionalism.
League system
The SPL generally features 8–10 teams.
Relegation does not occur annually due to the league’s development structure, but teams from the
Singapore Football League (SFL) can be promoted based on licensing and performance.
