Coppa Italia — HISTORY

Overview

The Coppa Italia is Italy’s premier national cup competition, first held in 1922 and organized by the Italian Football Federation (FIGC). After the inaugural edition, the tournament was paused and re-established in 1935–36, becoming a consistent part of Italian football thereafter.

The competition follows a knockout format, bringing together teams from Serie A, Serie B, and lower divisions. Although top-flight clubs generally dominate the tournament, giant-killing stories occasionally emerge, adding drama and unpredictability to the event.

The Coppa Italia champion qualifies for the UEFA Europa League (or UEFA Europa Conference League depending on league standings) and competes in the Supercoppa Italiana against the Serie A champion. The Final is typically held at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome, enhancing its prestige.
