Biography
Quick Career
Birth of a star
David Beckham was born on 2 May 1975 as the second child of Sandra Georgina and David Edward Alan Beckham. He grew up in Leytonstone, East London, where he fell in love with football at a very young age and dreamed of becoming a professional player.
He began his youth career with Ridgeway Rovers before joining Manchester United in 1991. Beckham made his senior debut in 1992, alongside the famous group known as “Fergie’s Fledglings.” He soon earned a starting role on the right side of midfield and later took the No. 7 shirt, previously worn by Mark Hughes. In the 1996 Premier League opener against Wimbledon, he became a household name after scoring a stunning long-range goal from the halfway line.
Beckham remained at Manchester United until 2003, helping the club win six Premier League titles and a European Cup. He played 386 matches for United, more than for any other club. However, as his glamorous off-field lifestyle grew, his relationship with manager Alex Ferguson began to deteriorate. Tensions peaked when Ferguson accidentally kicked a boot that struck Beckham above the eye, requiring stitches. With the relationship beyond repair, Manchester United sold Beckham to Real Madrid for €37 million.
International incidents
At the international level, Beckham also faced his share of controversy. He made his major tournament debut at the 1998 World Cup, although manager Glenn Hoddle initially kept him as a substitute. In the round-of-16 match against Argentina, Beckham was sent off for kicking Diego Simeone while lying on the pitch. England later lost on penalties, and Beckham became a prime target for heavy criticism from both fans and the media.
By Euro 2000, the situation had not fully improved. Despite providing two assists in England’s 2–3 opening loss to Portugal, Beckham was taunted by supporters throughout the game, eventually reacting by raising his middle finger. Ironically, the incident improved his image in the press, but England still exited in the group stage. Ahead of the 2002 World Cup, Beckham was appointed team captain. However, despite his leadership, England were eliminated by Brazil in the quarter-finals.
Galáctico
At Real Madrid, Beckham joined Ronaldo, Zidane, Figo and Raúl in the famous Galácticos squad. Despite the star-studded lineup, Real struggled for trophies during his first three seasons. Even so, Beckham continued to perform well and finished the 2005 La Liga season as the league leader in assists, proving his value as an adaptable and reliable player.
This difficult period peaked with Real’s unexpected elimination to Arsenal in the round of 16 of the 2006 Champions League. Soon after, Florentino Pérez resigned as club president, and Real began shifting away from the Galácticos philosophy. Under new manager Fabio Capello, Beckham initially fell out of favor, but he fought his way back into the team later in the season and played an important role in helping Real secure their first La Liga title in four years.
On the international stage, Beckham’s final major tournament was the 2006 World Cup. He helped England reach the quarter-finals, scoring a crucial free-kick against Ecuador in the round of 16. Before the match against Portugal, he suffered from illness and dehydration and was substituted shortly after halftime. Portugal eventually won the match on penalties. One day later, Beckham announced he would step down as England captain.
From LA to Paris
Having already agreed to a contract with Los Angeles Galaxy during his final year at Real Madrid, Beckham arrived in MLS to massive global attention. The media spotlight brought major commercial benefits, helping the Galaxy secure sponsorship deals while Beckham was immediately named team captain. Over the next five seasons, he helped the club win two MLS Cups in 2011 and 2012, proving his value as an influential player even outside Europe.
During MLS off-seasons, Beckham remained focused on staying fit for international duty. This led to two loan spells at Milan in 2009 and 2010. The second loan, however, ended in disappointment after he suffered an injury that forced him to miss the 2010 World Cup and a large portion of the following season with LA Galaxy.
In 2013, Beckham signed a short five-month contract with Paris Saint-Germain and helped the club secure a Ligue 1 title. At the end of the season, he officially retired from professional football, concluding a remarkable global career.
