J1 League (Japan)
The J1 League is the top professional football league in Japan and the highest tier of the
J.League system. Established in 1993, it transformed Japanese football from
semi-professional to fully professional and is now considered one of the strong leagues in Asia.
History and facts
Before the launch of the J.League, Japanese football was played under the semi-professional Japan Soccer League (JSL). The move to professionalism in 1993 revolutionized the sport and increased its popularity nationwide.
The league has expanded significantly since its inception, developing into a multi-tier system that includes J1, J2, and J3.
Japanese clubs compete in the AFC Champions League and have won multiple continental titles with teams such as Kashima Antlers, Urawa Red Diamonds, and Gamba Osaka.
League system
The J1 League sits at the top of the Japanese football pyramid.
Relegation leads to the J2 League, and promotion depends on a combination of league position and licensing requirements.
