Nigeria Premier Football League
The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) is the top-tier professional football league in Nigeria,
organized by the League Management Committee under the authority of the
Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).
The modern format evolved from earlier national leagues created in the 1970s,
and today it stands among the most competitive leagues in West Africa.
Historically, traditional powerhouses like Enyimba, Shooting Stars,
Enugu Rangers, and Kano Pillars have dominated the domestic scene.
History and facts
Nigeria’s first national league structure began in the 1970s, eventually becoming the Nigeria Premier League. In the 2010s it was rebranded as the Nigeria Professional Football League and later as the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL).
The league has produced many top African talents who later moved to Europe, while clubs like Enyimba achieved continental glory by winning the CAF Champions League back-to-back in 2003 and 2004.
Matches in the NPFL are known for passionate atmospheres, strong local rivalries, and large followings in cities such as Aba, Kano, Enugu, Ibadan, and Port Harcourt.
League system
The Nigeria Premier Football League typically features 20 clubs.
Each team plays the others twice (home and away), for a total of 38 matches
during a full round-robin season.
The lowest-ranked sides are relegated to the nationwide Nigeria National League (NNL),
while the best clubs from the NNL are promoted to the NPFL.
