South African Premier Division (DStv Premiership)
The South African Premier Division, currently known as the
DStv Premiership for sponsorship reasons, is the top-tier football league
in South Africa. It is operated by the Premier Soccer League (PSL) and
founded in 1996, replacing the former National Soccer League (NSL).
The league is one of Africa’s wealthiest and most commercially successful competitions,
featuring iconic clubs such as Mamelodi Sundowns, Kaizer Chiefs,
and Orlando Pirates.
History and facts
The PSL was established in 1996 to professionalize and modernize South African football. Since then, it has grown into one of Africa’s most financially powerful leagues.
Mamelodi Sundowns have dominated the league in the 2010s and 2020s, while Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates remain the country’s most supported clubs.
South Africa’s strong football culture, modern stadiums (built for the 2010 World Cup), and TV rights deals make the PSL a unique powerhouse in African football.
League system
The league features 16 teams.
The bottom placed team is relegated to the National First Division,
while the 15th-placed team enters promotion playoffs.
